Exclusive Interview With Alessandro S. Capezza, Remote Team Leader

Remote working has become a popular style of work for people all over the world due to the spread of COVID-19. To provide you with the best tips and tricks for remote work, we interviewed Alessandro S. Capezza, a remote team leader, who has been working remotely for many years. Hey Alessandro, please introduce yourself:

Hello, e-friends! I am Alessandro and I have been working remotely since 2014, managing team up to 15 people while trying to always find the best pizza in town. I hope today I can give you a tip or two regarding the location independent lifestyle!

How did you get to where you are today? What is your career background?

My first ever job was when I was 14 years old and I started working for a videogame website (it was remote work, just not called like that yet!) and my pay was getting videogames for free: What a dream! After that, I lived and travelled between Australia, the UK, Spain and Italy where I am from. I studied marketing and communication with a Master at Bocconi University, but I must say, the biggest learning tool was learning-by-doing: I worked both as Social Media and Paid Media Specialist and as an Account Director, slowly turning to Influencer and Affiliate Marketing. I am currently Country Manager for BlueStacks and Game.tv, 2 esports and gaming company with around 400 million users worldwide, managing a team of 15 people, full remotely.

What are your top 3 passions? And how do they tie into your career?

Volleyball is one of my strongest passion. I love playing in a team and feeling free on the beach! Also, I am learning a lot about finance and cryptocurrencies, and I believe the blockchain will change the world forever, giving mankind new freedom. Finally, I would say that my main passion is travelling: I have been in all the 5 continents and each person I have met during my path influenced me somehow!

What would you regard as your biggest achievement in your career so far?

I have been building communities from scratch for almost all of my career. My biggest achievement was building a 15 million users sports community across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter!

What digital skills do you think are the most in-demand for remote workers right now?

I wrote an article on my website Colivingvalley.com regarding the emerging jobs of the next years: I believe Data Scientists, Artificial Intelligence + Machine Learning and Digital marketing specialists will be in high demand! Also, the capacity to work without any close supervision is something many people worldwide still have to learn!

As a remote worker, how do you maintain a good work-life balance?

Working out at least 3 times a week is crucial! I love to live close by the beach and every time I can, I love to have a break in front of the sea. Also, I believe that for remote workers, it is important to not stay all day in front of your laptop and taking an offline-life break: reading, going for a walk and talking to people throughout the day!

What are your top 3 success tips for managing remote teams?

First of all, you should choose the right people. Here a funny story for you: once, I did a speech at an Esport and Gaming conference and I was allowed to invite guests: believe it or not, one of the guests I have invited was a member of my remote team and we met for the first time on stage in front of hundreds of people. And it was a success! You don’t need to meet in person to be successful, all you need is trust.

Other two tips: avoid information overload with documentation and hold people accountable: people need to be able to manage themselves!

In your opinion, how will coronavirus affect the working world?

Though question: a part of me believes that mankind will learn to respect Nature, to be close to others, that many will use this time to learn and to grow as individuals, spending more time to plan for a better future. Another part of me believes that many people are just wasting time binge-watching on Netflix and just waiting to get outside and get wasted. For sure, I believe that the majority of the world tried remote work for the first time and while many people are still to adjust, many others are already liking the feeling to work from home.

The next step is allowing people to work from anywhere. Is the world going to allow that in the next 5 years? I believe so, the world is going to change in a good way, people will have more freedom to explore and will become more productive. Work will be just a part of life, NOT the entire life!
